STRAND (Paul). - Lot 284
STRAND (Paul). Paul Strand. Matera, Soprintendenza per i Beni Artistici e Storici della Basilicata, Palazzo Lanfranchi, 1989. Folio, paperback, illustrated cover. A rare catalog published on the occasion of the major exhibition dedicated to Paul Strand at the Palazzo Lanfranchi in Matera (May 6–July 6, 1989), one of the first major Italian exhibitions devoted to the American master. The book traces his entire career, from his early experiments influenced by Alfred Stieglitz to the major photo books that established his international reputation (*Time in New England*, *La France de profil*, *Un Paese*, *Living Egypt*, *Les Hébrides*). The selection highlights the various facets of his work: frontal portraits of exceptional psychological intensity, landscapes, architecture, still lifes, and compositions of such formal rigor that they establish Strand as one of the founders of modern photography. Richly illustrated with full-page reproductions, this catalog also serves as a valuable record of how Strand’s work was received in Italy, a country to which he remained deeply attached after the publication of *Un Paese*. A very fine copy.
