SANDER (August). - Lot 265
SANDER (August).
The City of Cologne Presents: August Sander. The Cologne Years until 1938.
Cologne, The City of Cologne, [1984]. In-4, paperback.
Catalog published by the City of Cologne on the occasion of the exhibition devoted to August Sander’s years in Cologne prior to 1938, a pivotal period during which the photographer developed his monumental project *Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts* (People of the 20th Century).
Unlike retrospective catalogs devoted to portraits, this volume focuses primarily on interwar Cologne, a city that no longer exists. The photographs depict the shopping streets, squares, monuments, cafés, storefronts, public transportation, working-class neighborhoods, and the urban atmosphere of the Rhine capital before the destruction of World War II. The images are accompanied by historical commentary in German.
A brochure from the National Center for Photography announcing the Paris exhibitions from November 1995 to January 1996 is included with this copy.
Condition: very good copy; a few slight signs of wear on the cover, interior in fresh condition. Promotional brochure included.
