MONIER (Albert). - Lot 219
MONIER (Albert).
In the Land of the Grands Causses. Text by Henri Pourrat. Paris, Éditions Chaix, [circa 1947–1948]. Large quarto, loose-leaf format in the publisher’s illustrated folder.
A beautiful photographic volume devoted to the Grands Causses and the landscapes of the Rouergue, featuring photographs by Albert Monier—one of the leading French photographers of the first half of the 20th century—and an original text by Henri Pourrat. Through a series of remarkable heliogravures, Monier captures the majestic austerity of the limestone plateaus, the gorges, the villages, the shepherds, the herds, and scenes of rural life, in a vision that is both documentary and deeply poetic.
Published by Éditions Chaix, renowned for the quality of its photographic publications, this album follows in the great tradition of postwar French illustrated books dedicated to the provinces and national landscapes.
Condition: copy in the publisher’s illustrated slipcase, showing some scuffing, minor wear on the head and foot caps, and a few foxing spots and stains on the title page; interior generally fresh, with the photographic plates well preserved.
