BRECHT (Bertolt). The ABCs of War. Grenoble: Presses universitaires de Grenoble, 1985. Large quarto (24 x 31 cm), illustrated publisher’s hardcover. French edition edited, introduced, and annotated by Klaus Schuffels. Translated by Philippe Ivernel. Numerous black-and-white photographic reproductions. 214 pp. First French edition of *Kriegsfibel* (The ABCs of War), one of Bertolt Brecht’s most unique works. Conceived as early as the 1940s but not published in Germany until 1955, this book combines more than seventy press photographs related to World War II with quatrains composed by Brecht. By subverting images disseminated by propaganda or the illustrated press, the author offers a powerful reflection on war, violence, the media, and the manipulation of images. This extensively annotated edition places each photograph in its historical context and constitutes the first complete French translation of this classic of political literature and image theory. Condition: good copy. Hardcover showing some normal wear and tear, a dent with a small tear in the upper cap, and slight handling marks on the covers. Interior is in very fresh condition, with no annotations.
