An important monograph dedicated to Aenne Biermann (1898–1933), one of the leading figures of the German New Photography (Neues Sehen) movement of the interwar period. Compiled from the collections of the Museum Folkwang in Essen, the volume brings together the bulk of her work produced between 1925 and 1933, a period of exceptional creative intensity cut short by her untimely death at the age of thirty-four. A self-taught photographer, Biermann developed a resolutely modern visual language based on bold framing, bird’s-eye views, close-ups, and a particular attention to forms, materials, and visual rhythms. Her portraits, studies of children, everyday objects, plants, architecture, and landscapes reflect the influence of the Bauhaus and New Objectivity, while retaining a highly personal sensibility. This English-language edition, translated by Iain Boyd Whyte, is lavishly illustrated with high-quality reproductions and accompanied by critical commentary tracing Aenne Biermann’s pivotal role in the history of modern European photography.
