LOUIS XVI. - Lot 205
LOUIS XVI. Amnesty Act in favor of noncommissioned officers and soldiers who deserted before June 1, 1789. Paris, February 12, 1792. Large printed poster (approximately 56 × 42 cm), published in the name of Louis XVI, bearing the title: “AMNESTY LAW in favor of non-commissioned officers & soldiers who deserted their units before June 1, 1789.” Text adopted by the National Assembly on February 8, 1792, and enacted on February 12, 1792, printed in movable type on laid paper. The document is signed in the name of King Louis, countersigned by Duport, and includes, at the bottom, the registration and publication formalities for the Var department, with an extract signed by Secretary General Pèbre. This law grants amnesty to noncommissioned officers and soldiers who deserted before June 1, 1789, provided they meet the conditions set forth in the decree. It serves as significant evidence of the policy of national reconciliation pursued at the outset of the French Revolution and of the profound military reforms undertaken after 1789. Printed by Malliard, as indicated in the footer. Condition: generally good. Old creases from circulation, small marginal tears, some paper loss at the edges, and slight foxing, none of which affects the text. A fine copy, well-inked, with excellent legibility.
