PASS - CITY OF CHARLEVILLE - Lot 181
PASS - CITY OF CHARLEVILLE ARDENNES (Department of) - CITY OF CHARLEVILLE. Personal pass issued to COUVENIER (Jeanne-Victoire), wife of Perrant. Charleville, 6 Pluviôse, Year VIII (January 26, 1800). Document printed and handwritten on paper, large folio size (approximately 33 × 22 cm), bearing several administrative stamps and signatures. A rare official pass issued by the municipality of Charleville during the Consulate, authorizing Jeanne-Victoire Couvenier, wife of Perrant, residing in Charleville (Ardennes), to travel to Reims (Marne). The document provides a very detailed description of the traveler: 20 years old, 1.635 m tall, chestnut hair, brown eyes, oval face, medium-sized nose, medium-sized mouth, round chin. It was issued in the name of the French Republic, bearing the seals of the municipality of Charleville and the department of the Ardennes, as well as the signatures of the mayor, the secretary, and the prefect. This type of pass, made necessary by travel controls at the end of the Revolution and the beginning of the Consulate, constitutes a valuable administrative record of the internal movement of people. Condition: a fine specimen despite creases from use. A few foxing spots, minor rubbing, and slight marginal wear without affecting the text. Seals and handwritten notes are well preserved. A rare administrative document bearing a name from Year VIII.
