FRANCE - DEPARTMENT OF THE ARDENNES. CITY OF CHARLEVILLE. - Lot 143
FRANCE - DEPARTMENT OF THE ARDENNES. CITY OF CHARLEVILLE. Personal pass. Charleville, 23 Prairial, Year IX (June 12, 1801). Printed document with significant handwritten notes, 1 page, large folio. A rare pass issued by the City of Charleville during the Consulate, authorizing CITIZEN ANTOINE LÉOPOLD MARÉCHAL, residing in Givet (Ardennes), to travel to Paris and Versailles. The document includes a very detailed physical description of the bearer: age: 45 years; height: 1.880 m (1,880 millimeters); chestnut hair; blue eyes; elongated face; long nose; medium-sized mouth; round chin. It bears numerous endorsements, handwritten signatures, and official seals, notably those of the Charleville City Hall, the Ardennes Department, and the prefectural authorities. The laissez-passer is signed by several officials responsible for its registration and endorsement. This document is particularly representative of the French administration under the Consulate, a few months before the proclamation of the Consulate for Life and subsequently the Empire, and attests to the control of movement within the territory. Condition: a fragile document with significant historical restorations, marginal tears, and small areas of missing paper; original folds; well-preserved seals and handwriting. A spectacular piece despite its condition, of great historical and administrative value.
