COLLET (Concordat priest) - Lot 79
COLLET (Concordat priest) Autograph letter to Citizen Morel. Lyon, 23 Pluviôse, Year X (February 12, 1802). 4 pages, in-4 format, on a double-leaf sheet with handwritten address and postmarks. A letter combining family news, daily life, and religious updates during the Consulate. Collet devotes a large part of his correspondence to the serious illness of the mother of the Poupier family, whose condition he monitors day by day with touching care. The medical descriptions and the care provided offer a vivid glimpse into provincial medicine in the early 19th century. The letter also contains several details regarding plans to restore the Catholic faith, which were still shrouded in uncertainty at that time. Collet reports on the reactions of Lyon’s priests and the first public demonstrations of support for the religious reforms then in the works. Finally, it includes various political and administrative updates, notably regarding the removal of emigrants from the rolls and matters concerning the Rhône department. A particularly vivid account of Lyon society on the eve of the implementation of the Concordat.
