BERTRAND DE MOLLEVILLE (Antoine-François). - Lot 52
BERTRAND DE MOLLEVILLE (Antoine-François). Autograph letter signed in his capacity as Minister of the Navy. Paris, January 20, 1792. Signed autograph letter, one folio page, addressed to the president of the Society of Friends of the Constitution in Montreuil. An important political letter written a few months before the fall of the monarchy. The Minister of the Navy sends a printed copy of the speech he has just delivered before the National Assembly: “I have the honor of sending you a copy of the latest speech I delivered to the National Assembly on the 19th of this month in response to the reckless accusations leveled against me...” He concludes: “I hope that reading this speech will convince you of the integrity of my principles and the propriety of my conduct.” Beautiful autograph signature: Bertrand de Molleville Recipient: Mr. President of the Society of Friends of the Constitution of Montreuil. Historical Significance This letter is directly linked to the attacks directed against Bertrand de Molleville in early 1792, when he attempted to defend the royal government’s naval policy before the National Assembly. It attests to the organized distribution of his speech among constitutional societies, a few months before the fall of Louis XVI. Political letters signed by Bertrand de Molleville during his time in office are significantly more sought after than his ordinary correspondence. Condition In very fine condition. A few creases from handling. Ink is perfectly fresh. Large, very legible signature.
