OVERSEAS COUNTRIES - Lot 332
OVERSEAS COUNTRIES L.A.S. in German signed C. H. V. Oldenburg, Port-au-Prince, December 19, 1837, addressed to Messrs. C. Gaden & Klipsch in Bordeaux. 1 folio page; address on verso with postal mark "PAYS D'OUTREMER", transit stamps and traces of the closing seal. Good condition, light postal folds. Short but interesting commercial letter from Port-au-Prince to a Bordeaux trading house. The correspondent informs his partners of the shipment of samples and commercial documents relating to colonial cargoes, presumably linked to the Haitian coffee trade. This piece illustrates the constant exchanges between German trading houses established in Saint-Domingue/Haiti and Bordeaux merchants in the 1830s. The letter retains all the postal interest of maritime correspondence from the West Indies, with its handwritten mark and "Pays d'Outremer" linear postmark. A representative document of post-independence Haitian colonial trade, combining Germanic merchant networks, maritime transit via Le Havre and the commercial center of Bordeaux.
