PIJART (François). - Lot 258
PIJART (François). 1597-1692. Physician to Louis XIV and Dean of the Doctors Regent of the Paris Faculty of Medicine. Partly printed P. signed "F. Pijart". Paris, May 28, 1679. Oblong vellum under printed label of the Rentes de l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris. Interesting receipt signed by François Pijart, physician ordinary to the King and a leading figure in the Paris Faculty of Medicine during the reign of Louis XIV. The document records the payment of part of his wages: "...the sum of thirty seven livres ten sols for the second quarter of the year 1679..." This document illustrates the system of rents constituted on the aids and gabelles of the City of Paris, used to pay the salaries and pensions of royal officers. François Pijart was one of the most highly regarded physicians of his time, dean of the regent doctors of the Faculty of Paris and attached to the household of Louis XIV. Beautiful document on vellum with large decorative letterpress vignette, legible autograph signature and interesting administrative testimony to royal medicine in the Grand Siècle. Old bends and minor soiling.
