PERRAUD, Adolphe - Lot 159
PERRAUD, Adolphe Adolphe Perraud L.A.S. "+ Adolphe, évêque d'Autun" addressed to a friend. Autun, September 25, 1895. 4 pages in-8 on double sheet. Beautiful autograph letter from the cardinal and bishop of Autun, evoking personal considerations, the visit of a traveler to Autun and, above all, the troubled social situation in the industrial basin of Le Creusot. Perraud writes that a new strike has just broken out at Le Creusot, which he describes as "a revolutionary and socialist enterprise", directed in his view against "religion and those who represent it, priests and nuns". He also mentions "M. Schneider", probably Eugène Schneider or a member of the Schneider dynasty in Le Creusot, and deplores the influence exerted on the workers by "agitators". An interesting document combining pastoral concerns, the social climate of the late 19th century and labor tensions in the great steel-making center of Le Creusot. The tone is highly personal, revealing the prelate's conservative stance on social movements. A few creases and minor signs of use; overall good condition.
