GARDANE-DUPORT (Charles, or Charles Gardanne). Born in Toulo - Lot 62
GARDANE-DUPORT (Charles, or Charles Gardanne). Born in Toulon in 1746, died in 1815. French surgeon.
L.A.S. "Gardanne". Paris, January 14, 1810. 2 pp. in-8.
Interesting medical and administrative letter in which the surgeon mentions various steps taken on behalf of his correspondent, as well as medical advice concerning an operation.
Gardanne explains that he delayed replying, having mislaid his correspondent's address:
"Your letter and Monsieur, where the address you gave me was, having been mislaid for some time...".
He then returns to the steps and claims made on his behalf, which were not successful for the previous year but could be for the current one:
"...the steps I owed you, for all the steps you were kind enough to take with regard to my claims... which, although they did not succeed last year, may perhaps be very favorable this year...".
The second part of the letter is of direct medical interest. Gardanne gives his opinion on a surgical procedure requested by his correspondent:
"As for the prescription you were asking me for the doctor, I think we should postpone this operation until next spring..."
The letter ends with warm thanks and assurances of "inviolable attachment".
A fine testimony to medical practice in the early 19th century, combining administrative concerns, exchanges of services between colleagues and prudent therapeutic recommendations. A well-preserved document, with a dense handwriting typical of medical correspondence during the Empire.
