SAINT-DOMINGUE - 1802 EXPEDITION - Lot 264
SAINT-DOMINGUE - 1802 EXPEDITION Important set of 4 letters signed in Spanish, addressed to General Victor-Emmanuel Leclerc, commander-in-chief of the French expedition to Saint-Domingue, brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, who died of yellow fever in Cape Town on November 2, 1802. Beautiful manuscript set of several official letters from senior officers and Spanish authorities in Havana and Cuba, all dated 1802, at the very time of the French expedition sent to regain control of Saint-Domingue. They include a letter signed by Juan María de Villavicencio, Commander General of Havana, dated February 13, 1802 two important letters signed by Luis de Viguri, dated March 10 and May 1, 1802 a fourth letter from Cuba, dated August 2, 1802 These letters deal with financial aid, military supplies, food, flour, meat, cash advances and logistical support for French troops in Santo Domingo. Very interesting appendices: accounting table signed by Julian Fernandez, Chief State Controller of Havana handwritten extract from the peace treaty between France and Spain Items of great interest for the history of the Leclerc expedition, the Saint-Domingue campaign and the last moments of the French presence before Haiti's independence. A historically important set.
