JOLY (Étienne-Louis-Hector de) - Lot 119
JOLY (Étienne-Louis-Hector de) Born in Montpellier, 1756 - died in 1837. Lawyer and politician; Minister of Justice under Louis XVI (July 3, 1792); Freemason, officer of the Grand Orient. Autograph letter signed "P. E. Joly", addressed to Monsieur Bazot, "homme de lettres". [S.l.], August 27 [s.d.]. 1 page in-8, with address and postmarks. Enclosure. Interesting letter mixing personal considerations and exchanges of objects, in which Joly evokes two subjects: waiting for a marshal "who is expected any day now" in Paris, and a collection of objects intended for his correspondent: "I have a few objects intended for you... I'll take care of you". He concludes by expressing his "sincere desire to oblige you personally" and sending his "fraternal sentiments", a revealing formulation of the Masonic context. A hand-sewn white leather apprentice's apron is enclosed. An interesting document for the history of French Freemasonry at the crossroads of the Ancien Régime and the Empire. Joly, an officer of the Grand Orient from 1788, participated in the life of several lodges (L'Âge d'or, La Modération dite Loge d'Anacréon, Le Phénix) and was associated with the 1804 "Masonic Concordat", the act of union between the Grand Orient de France and the Scottish Grand Lodge under the First Empire.
