HALLAYS (André, 1859-1930). - Lot 105
HALLAYS (André, 1859-1930). Autograph manuscript signed with an initials. S.l.n.d. [circa 1930]. 4 pp. 3/4 in-folio, numbered, on lined paper. Important autograph draft of an article or obituary dedicated to the writer and journalist André Hallays, a leading figure in French letters, columnist for the Journal des Débats and ardent defender of French Alsace. The text, in a firm, steady hand, is an elaborate working manuscript, probably preparatory to a commemorative publication or a speech delivered shortly after Hallays' death in 1930. The author gives a comprehensive account of Hallays' intellectual and patriotic role in the moral defense of Alsace before 1918, evoking his travels to Strasbourg, Colmar, Mulhouse, Sélestat, Haguenau, Saverne and the Hoh-Koenigsbourg, as well as his links with Pierre Bucher and Francophile Alsatian circles. Numerous particularly evocative passages, including : Les cœurs n'ont pas changé" ("Hearts have not changed") and, in conclusion : "We will piously keep ... the memory of this good servant of French Alsace". An excellent account of the French perception of Alsace between the German annexation and the interwar years. The manuscript is of great interest both for intellectual history and for Alsatian, historical and literary collections.
