GRÜN, Alphonse - Lot 101
GRÜN, Alphonse (Strasbourg, 1801 - 1866) Jurist, journalist and man of letters. Set of two autograph letters signed "Al. Grün", addressed to "mon cher ami" and "mon cher Armand". Paris, March 31, 1851 and February 15, 1853. 2 pieces: 1 page in-8 and 1 ½ page in-8, the second on printed letterhead of the "Ministère d'État et de la Maison de l'Empereur", with suscription and postmarks. Attached is a printed article: Des crèches en Angleterre. Interesting collection of correspondence combining intellectual concerns and direct testimony to the political upheavals of the early Second Empire. In the first letter, Grün sends his correspondent his recent publications, which he recommends with conviction: "I am sending you the last three little things I have published [...] I recommend to you, if necessary, the publications of our association for popular education. It is to be spread in the countryside and everywhere among the people", revealing his commitment to the dissemination of knowledge and popular education. The second, more extensive letter is a personal account of the consequences of the regime change following the coup d'état of 1851. In it, Grün recalls the loss of his position at the Moniteur universel, which was replaced "out of hand", and the steps he took to obtain compensation. He recounts the interventions of "influential people" and the solution finally obtained: his appointment as "archivist to the crown", a modest position but one that left him time for his personal work. These letters are a vivid testimony to the professional realities of pressmen in the face of political change, as well as to the networks of influence and mechanisms of administrative compensation under the Second Empire.
