BLANC (Charles). - Lot 17
BLANC (Charles). Brother of Louis Blanc. Born Castres, 1813 - died 1882. Art critic, historian and theorist, author of the famous Grammaire des arts du dessin. Member of the Académie française. Director of Fine Arts under the Second and Third Republics. Set of 3 letters: 2 autograph letters signed (1867 and 1872) and 1 letter signed on the letterhead of the Ministère de l'Instruction publique, Direction des Beaux-Arts (1872). 1867. 1 page in-4. Beautiful critical and friendly letter evoking his correspondent's Causeries sur l'art. In it, Blanc expresses his abiding interest in "true principles, eternal principles", and develops aesthetic considerations nourished by his reflections on art and the classical tradition, particularly Greek. He also mentions a portrait of a young Chinese model, as well as his own journalistic work, notably on the Universal Exhibition and contemporary works. Paris, August 1, 1872. 1 page in-8. Letter addressed to a fellow critic, praising an article published in Le Constitutionnel on the history of painters. Blanc acknowledges a long-standing and solid competence, recalling the Salons chronicles published in the Courrier français, which he read "with a double interest", situating himself in the same sphere of literary and critical activity. April 6, 1872. 1 page in-4, headed Ministère de l'Instruction publique, Direction des Beaux-Arts. Administrative letter concerning the awarding of a retirement pension following the elimination of a job, testifying to Charles Blanc's official functions in the Fine Arts administration. A coherent and interesting collection, combining aesthetic reflection, literary sociability and administrative activity, illustrating the different facets of Charles Blanc as critic, writer and senior civil servant.
