CHARLES X PERIOD. TROUBADOUR CLOCK - Lot 202
CHARLES X PERIOD. TROUBADOUR CLOCK
Gilt bronze and chased "Troubadour" clock decorated with two musicians in Renaissance costume, one playing the zither and the other the harp, on either side of a richly ornamented post with rose garlands, Antique-style winged women in low relief and quiver trophies. The top bears a lyre between two flaps of sheet music incised with the title "L'Air du Troubadour". The white enameled dial features black-painted Roman numerals for the hours and hour markers for the minutes, the center animated by a fluted background engraved with a concentric rosette.
The mound features a bas-relief decoration in three historicist scenes: a pilgrim at prayer before a niche housing an effigy of the Blessed Virgin and Child in an alcove; the departure of the knightly lover around whom his damsel ties a scarf while his horse leaves the stable, and a highwayman near a fortified castle in the background.
The whole rests on four quadrangular feet adorned with sea anchors.
The overall gilded decoration is shaded in places with amatis and brilliants on the patina, probably from agate rubbing and polishing, highlighting the fine chasing of the romantic composition.
Charles X period. Pendulum present (minor wear to the dial at the level of the number X and III).
H 45 cm
Provenance: château in the Creuse region. In the family since the reign of Louis Philippe.
