DELACROIX (Eugène). - Lot 83
DELACROIX (Eugène). Born in Charenton Saint Maurice. 1798-1863. Painter, watercolorist, draughtsman and lithographer. L.A.S. "E. Delacroix" to a gentleman. S.l.n.d. (This Tuesday morning). 1 page 1/4 in-8. Delacroix regrets not being able to go to his home that evening, ...for the last three days I have been suffering from an inflammation of the throat for which I am forbidden to be in any kind of meeting and to say a single word. The consequences of these indispositions to which I am subject are so serious for me that they are temporarily forcing me to a severe diet...He instructs him to express...how distressed I am by this setback to Monsieur Shulhoff... [probably Julius Schulhoff, 1825-1898, pianist and composer whom Frédéric Chopin encouraged to become a professional pianist].A major painter of the Romantic movement, Eugène Delacroix left a number of committed works, often linked to current events, such as Scènes des massacres de Scio (1824) or La liberté guidant le peuple (1830), as well as works of literary inspiration, such as La barque de Dante (1822) and La mort de Sardanapale (1827-1828) inspired by a poem by Byron.
