BUGEAUD (Thomas Robert). - Lot 58
BUGEAUD (Thomas Robert). Born in Limoges. 1784-1849. Marshal of France, Governor General of Algeria. L.A.S. "Bugeaud" to "Mon cher Mr de Bourcy". Exideuil, February 5, 1841. 1 p. in-4. Bugeaud recommends a certain Mr. Lucien Rey: ...You promised me to look after my protégés all the more as I would be absent. I'm already as good as in Africa, as I'm leaving in a few days' time; but first I'd like to ask you to promote Mr Lucien Rey, a foot clerk in Auxerre. I think he's 5 or 6 years up the ladder. He belongs to one of the best families in Exideuil, whom I am anxious to oblige (...) I have just obtained a magnificent success in my election against all the oppons united and determined to overthrow the jailer of Blaye and the cutthroat of rue Transnonain. All maneuvers have been employed against me...Bugeaud alludes to his time as governor of the Blaye citadel during the imprisonment of the Duchess de Berry, and to the violent suppression of the 1834 riots.
