Paul Berthon, a pupil of Eugène Grasset, was a major figure in Art Nouveau, the emblematic movement of the late 19th century. Known for his delicate prints and refined compositions, he developed a unique style, blending medieval influences, Japonism and naturalist inspiration. His works, imbued with softness and sophistication, are part of the great decorative tradition of the Belle Époque.
Harmonie Médiévale perfectly illustrates the artist's poetic universe. This color etching shows a couple in a lush landscape, surrounded by a stylized floral design. True to the principles of Art Nouveau, Berthon favors supple lines, vegetal motifs and a subtle palette, lending the whole a contemplative yet bewitching atmosphere.
The influence of medieval illuminations and Japanese prints is perceptible here, notably in the refined composition and balance of forms. Careful attention to detail and chromatic harmony reinforce the work's timeless elegance.
