BIHALJI-MERIN (Oto). Frescoes and Icons. Medieval Serbian an - Lot 36
BIHALJI-MERIN (Oto). Frescoes and Icons. Medieval Serbian and Macedonian Art. Brussels, Elsevier, Les Éditions et Ateliers d'Art Graphique Elsevier, n.d. [circa 1960]. Large quarto, publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding. A major study by Oto Bihalji-Merin devoted to medieval religious art in Serbia and Macedonia. Photographic documentation by Tošo Dabac, D. Stanimirović, and others, with explanatory notes by Svetislav Mandić. Extensive photographic illustrations in black-and-white and color, often full-page, depicting major collections of medieval frescoes, murals, and icons from the Balkans. The book highlights, in particular, the originality of this pictorial tradition, situated at the crossroads of Byzantine art and local Serbian and Macedonian schools. A beautiful documentary publication, particularly noteworthy for the quality and scope of its photographic campaign, which preserves the condition of numerous monumental complexes as they appeared in the mid-20th century. Illustrated hardcover with slight scuffing and scratches; corners and caps show minor signs of wear; interior in good condition.
