THE CONTRAST — PARIS BEFORE THE WAR - Lot 200
THE CONTRAST — PARIS BEFORE THE WAR VERNIER (Charles). THE CONTRAST. Paris Before the War — Paris During the Siege. Paris, Lith. Formstecher frères, 122 Faubourg Saint-Martin, [1870–1871]. Colored lithograph signed by Ch. Vernier. On the left, Paris before the war is depicted as an elegant young woman holding a goblet, surrounded by flowers and a bottle; on the right, Paris during the Siege appears as a stern female allegory dressed in black, armed with a saber, holding the tricolor flag, and surrounded by cannonballs and military equipment. A highly evocative allegory of the capital’s transformation during the 1870–1871 Siege of Paris. Condition: yellowed paper; a few small stains and minor wear along the edges.
