SUCCESS - Lot 188
SUCCESS [ANONYMOUS]. — Success. Paris, 1871. A large, color-enhanced satirical lithograph depicting, around a gambling table, a woman personifying France, a French soldier, and an Eastern or Prussian figure, while a bird stands in the center of the composition. The sword placed at the top bears the motto “Long live the freedom of turnips.” On the right is a decorative element alluding to the battles of 1870. The captioned dialogue, printed beneath the image, depicts the political and military uncertainties following the Franco-Prussian War. Contemporary hand-colored lithograph on tinted paper. The inscription “Paris, 1871” is engraved on the stone. A few folds and creases, marginal tears along the top edge, and a slight weakness at the center fold; colors are well preserved.
