ELLE - Lot 103
ELLE VERNIER (Charles). ELLE. “There are a hundred ways to take her / She’s for rent but not for sale.” Paris, A. Mordret, publisher, 8 rue Poulet, [circa 1871], No. 9. Colored lithograph signed Ch. Vernier. A young nude woman, wearing a red Phrygian cap, is entwined by a gigantic serpent while she holds a mirror aloft above her. The female figure is an allegory of France or the Republic. The caption—“There are a hundred ways to take her / She’s for rent but not for sale”—gives the composition its political and risqué character. A beautiful and unique plate from the series published by A. Mordret against the backdrop of the political upheavals of 1870–1871. Condition: slightly yellowed paper; a few foxing spots and stains; a tear with a small loss at the lower edge and minor marginal wear.
