Badinguet in the Pillory — Colored Print - Lot 61
Badinguet in the Pillory — Colored Print [NAPOLEON III]. — BADINGUET IN THE PILLORY. Napoleon the Great!! — Napoleon the Little. Brussels, Max. Dest, publisher, [1870–1871]. A spectacular anti-Bonapartist caricature pitting Napoleon I, depicted as a glorious sovereign, against Napoleon III—“Badinguet”—burdened by inscriptions recalling the main grievances leveled against the Second Empire: “Invasion,” “December 2, 1851,” “Mexico,” “Assassins,” “Corruption,” “Cayenne,” “Strasbourg,” “Boulogne,” “Sedan,” “Toulon,” “Theft of 25,000,000 from the Bank of France,” etc. Below the composition is a reproduction of “Toulon,” an excerpt from Victor Hugo’s *Les Châtiments*, with his name printed at the bottom of the text. Large, hand-colored lithograph, very expressive and of fine decorative quality. Horizontal center fold; a few creases and small marginal tears; paper slightly browned.
