ARMAND-DUMARESQ (Édouard) Portrait of Armand Dumaresq. [Paris, circa 1890]. A photographic or photomechanical bust portrait of the painter Édouard Armand-Dumaresq (1826–1895), set in the center of an ornate printed frame featuring allegorical motifs: figures representing the arts, military trophies, weapons, breastplates, cannons, and a laurel wreath. Name printed below the portrait: “ARMAND DUMARESQ.” A French painter and draftsman, a student of Thomas Couture, Armand-Dumaresq specialized in particular in military painting and battle scenes. The Musée d’Orsay holds several photographic portraits of the artist, including a Woodburytype from around 1892. Small tears and marginal losses, foxing, and traces of moisture in the lower portion.
