PARIS SEX-APPEAL. — No. 19. Carnival Frenzy. - Lot 216
PARIS SEX-APPEAL. — No. 19. Carnival Frenzy. Paris, Paris Sex-Appeal, [December 1934]. In-4 format, approximately 25 × 20 cm, paperback, color-illustrated cover, numerous black-and-white photographs in the text, unpaginated. Price per issue: 4 francs. The date can be established with a fair degree of certainty: the BnF holds issues 6 through 29, covering January 1934 through December 1935, and a recent academic study specifically identifies No. 19 as the December 1934 issue. An issue of this interesting Parisian monthly magazine of glamour and eroticism, founded in 1933 and published until 1951, with a hiatus during the war. *Paris Sex-Appeal* combined light-hearted short stories, columns on seduction and nightlife, and sensual and nude photographs, with a different color cover for each issue. The magazine is now cataloged by the BnF (National Library of France) both among collections of erotic short stories and among collections of erotically themed photographs. This issue, titled “Carnaval en folie,” is particularly representative of the aesthetic of the 1930s: a colorized photographic cover featuring a portrait of a woman and a prominent photographic illustration inside. Of particular note is the announcement for the “Charm and Seduction Contest—Miss Sex Appeal 1935 Pageant,” an event organized by the magazine. The text announces a Parisian evening featuring singer-songwriter Jean Marsac and an honorary jury chaired by Kees van Dongen, accompanied notably by Paul Sieffert, Jules Grün, Albert Baure, and Raymond Pallier. This section lends the issue additional documentary value regarding the culture of entertainment, beauty, and the tabloid press in interwar Paris. The reproduced photographs also depict scenes that were very characteristic of the glamour press of the time: notably a series featuring a bullfighter and a lavishly illustrated short story, “The Man Who Loved a Model,” by Walter Rollmann. The magazine was printed by Henri François at 9 avenue de Taillebourg in Paris, while Jean Mézerette is listed as the manager on this copy. In fair condition but apparently complete. The cover is intact—which is important for this type of periodical—but quite noticeably worn: scuffing, creases, and small tears; missing material on the spine and margins; worn staples; paper naturally yellowed. A few marginal marks and imperfections. The interior, however, remains perfectly presentable, and the large photographic spreads are well preserved.
