MAZDA — THE TOUR DE FRANCE OF LIGHT - Lot 172
MAZDA — THE TOUR DE FRANCE OF LIGHT MAZDA. The Tour de France of Light. Selected Illuminations from the Tour de France of Light. Paris, Les Ateliers ABC, 1938. Large in-4 paperback, midnight blue cover illustrated with beams of light and the title “MAZDA” in gold lettering. Numerous photographic illustrations. A RARE ADVERTISING AND PHOTOGRAPHIC PUBLICATION DEDICATED TO THE ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING DISPLAYS CREATED BY MAZDA THROUGHOUT FRANCE IN THE LATE 1930s. The cover design, with its powerful converging beams of light, geometric typography, and blue, white, and gold printing, is particularly characteristic of the advertising aesthetics of the interwar period. Published by Les Ateliers ABC, Paris, 1938, as indicated on the inside back cover. The book is of dual interest: it offers a history of night photography and architectural lighting, as well as a history of French advertising and graphic design in the 1930s. Condition: shows signs of use. Cover is scuffed and soiled, with worn edges and corners, small tears, and marginal losses; interior is yellowed with some foxing and visible signs of moisture.
