FOCH-EYSSETTE (Élisabeth). Neiges. Pour mémoire. - Lot 100
FOCH-EYSSETTE (Élisabeth). Neiges. Pour mémoire. Paris, Contrejour, 1991. Square 8vo, 79 pp., publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket, numerous black-and-white photographs. “Pour mémoire” series, edited by Bernard Plossu. ISBN 2-85949-116-3. First edition of this beautiful photographic book entirely devoted to snow, conceived and presented by Élisabeth Foch-Eyssette. Published in Contrejour’s “Pour mémoire” collection, the book brings together 58 photographs selected around a single theme: snow as landscape, matter, light, and memory. The BnF confirms the 1991 Paris edition, 79 pages, and classifies the book among works dedicated to snow in art. The selection is particularly compelling due to the diversity of perspectives brought together: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Édouard Boubat, Brassaï, André Kertész, Josef Koudelka, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Bernard Plossu, Marc Riboud, Jeanloup Sieff, Josef Sudek, Gotthard Schuh, Michael Kenna, and Izis, among others. The photographs span from the early decades of the 20th century to much more contemporary images and constitute less a documentary history of snow than a true poetic anthology of winter photography. This approach is perfectly summed up by the collection’s mission: to preserve through images “what might disappear.” *Neiges* thus juxtaposes pristine landscapes, winter sports, roads, human silhouettes, and scenes of everyday life, in which the white often tends to reduce the image to a few essential lines and shapes. The book has, in fact, achieved a certain degree of lasting fame: it is explicitly cited as the photographic source for the experimental film *Remembrance of Snow Photographs*, presented at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2003. A fine copy. The interior is fresh and the hardcover is well-preserved; there are a few marks, scuffs, and minor stains on the dust jacket, particularly toward the bottom of the back cover, but no significant defects.
