FIEMEYER (Isabelle). — Marcel Griaule, Dogon Citizen. - Lot 96
FIEMEYER (Isabelle). — Marcel Griaule, Dogon Citizen. Arles, Actes Sud, 2004. “Archives privées” series. 8vo, paperback, illustrated photographic cover, 166 pp., including 26 pages of plates, numerous black-and-white photographs. ISBN 2-7427-4805-9. Bibliographic entries list the dimensions as 20.5 × 15 cm and include a bibliography on pp. 165–166. First edition. A biography of Marcel Griaule (1898–1956), one of the leading figures in 20th-century French ethnology and a specialist in Dogon society. Isabelle Fiemeyer traces his career from his early ethnographic expeditions through his teaching and his work on the Dogon. The book’s significance lies particularly in its use of unpublished archival materials and personal accounts, accompanied by a substantial collection of Griaule’s African photographs. The photograph on the front cover depicts the Dogon village of Banani in 1931, from the Marcel Griaule collection; the back cover features a portrait of Griaule from around 1930, from his personal archives. The book also explores lesser-known aspects of his career and personality: his work at the Musée de l’Homme, his teaching, his activities during the war, and his role in the institutionalization of African studies. Very fine copy. Clean cover with only a few slight signs of handling and minimal scuffing; interior in excellent condition.
