TOLSTOY (Leon). War and Peace. Illustrations by Edy Legrand. - Lot 279
TOLSTOY (Leon). War and Peace. Illustrations by Edy Legrand. Paris, Gallimard, 1960. TOLSTOY (Leon). — WAR AND PEACE. Translated by Henri Mongault, with a preface by Pierre Pascal and an index by Sylvie Luneau. An illustrated edition featuring thirty-two watercolors by Edy Legrand. Paris, Gallimard, NRF, 1960. 2 volumes, large 8vo, publisher’s bindings based on a design by Paul Bonet, in full cream-colored grained leather, adorned on the covers and spines with a spectacular radiating geometric pattern printed in green and red; titles, author’s name, volume numbers, and the NRF monogram on the spines. The set is preserved in its original gray slipcase. A beautiful illustrated edition of War and Peace, in Henri Mongault’s classic translation. It is adorned with 32 watercolors by Edy Legrand, reproduced in full color on full pages. The colophon specifies that the illustrations were engraved in the workshops of Bussière and Nouël and the Société Technique d’Offset, then printed on the presses of S.I.D.I. in Levallois. The text was set in Baskerville type and printed by Imprimerie Floch in Mayenne. Plumex vellum from the Téka paper mills; paper for the illustrations from the Libert paper mills. Binding by Paul Bonet The bibliophilic appeal of this edition lies largely in its publisher’s binding, designed based on a model by Paul Bonet (1889–1971). The decoration is particularly characteristic of his graphic style: geometric patterns, radiating beams, and repeating red star motifs on the covers and spines. The two volumes placed side by side form a very successful decorative whole. It is, therefore, a publisher’s binding based on Paul Bonet’s design, and not an original binding handcrafted by Bonet. The colophon states: 10,250 copies bound according to Paul Bonet’s design, including: 10,000 copies numbered 1 through 10,000; 250 non-commercial copies numbered 10,001 through 10,250. Printed on September 5, 1960. Copy no. 2497. A very fine copy. The bindings are particularly fresh, with the decoration on the covers and spines well preserved, showing no significant visible wear. The pages are clean and fresh; the color illustrations are well preserved. Original slipcase included, with a few minor marks, scuffs, and wear on the edges, which do not affect the volumes. Having both volumes together with their original slipcase is a real bonus.
