SIMENON (Georges). — Les Pitard. - Lot 266
SIMENON (Georges). — Les Pitard. Illustrations by Robert Joël. Paris, Librairie Gründ, Mazarine Collection, 1945. Large 8vo / small 4to, 160 pp., paperback, embossed cover printed in black and blue, untrimmed. First illustrated edition, constituting the eighth volume of the “Mazarine Collection.” It is adorned with 32 compositions by Robert Joël, including 12 full-color plates (one as a frontispiece) and numerous black-and-white drawings within the text, reproduced by phototype. Strictly limited edition of 1,200 numbered copies: 200 copies on B.F.K. paper from the Papeteries de Rives, accompanied by a black-and-white set of the out-of-text engravings on pure-fiber vellum, and 1,000 copies on pure-fiber vellum, numbered from 1 to 1,000. One of the 1,000 copies on pure-fiber vellum, this one being No. 819. First published in 1935, *Les Pitard* belongs to Simenon’s “hard-boiled novels” series. The maritime plot, centered on Captain Émile Lannec and his wife Mathilde aboard the Tonnerre-de-Dieu, lends itself particularly well to Robert Joël’s illustrations, which capture the novel’s port and maritime atmosphere. This illustrated edition is now well established in bibliographies and catalogs devoted to Simenon. A fine paperback copy, preserved in its original illustrated cover. The cover is slightly faded with a few small marks and stains, and minimal signs of wear at the edges; the interior is clean and fresh overall.
