RACINE (Jean) — Phaedra and Hippolytus RACINE (Jean). — Phaedra and Hippolytus. A tragedy published based on the original text, with a foreword and anecdotes by Ad. van Bever. Paris, Georges Crès et Cie, “Le Théâtre d’Art,” 1919. In-8, XXIV–222 pp., paperback, cover lined with cream-colored paper printed in black and red, printed spine, untrimmed. An elegant typographic edition of *Phèdre*, the fifth volume of the “Le Théâtre d’Art” collection, edited by Adolphe van Bever. It is adorned with a frontispiece, a portrait of Racine, and numerous decorative compositions and vignettes drawn by Ciolkowski and woodcut by G. Aubert. The colophon specifies a total print run of 1,700 copies: 50 on old Imperial Japanese paper and 1,650 on vellum from the Manufactures de Rives, in addition to a few non-commercial copies. One of the 1,650 copies on Rives vellum, this one being no. 1010. The book retains its beautiful original gilt-embossed cover, with the title *Phèdre et Hippolyte* printed in red and black and Ciolkowski’s decorative design. The pages, on fine vellum with wide margins, are untrimmed. Condition: a fine copy in its original binding. The cover shows fairly pronounced and uneven browning, particularly on the front and back covers, with a few small marks and minor wear; slight weakness/crease at certain corners. Spine well-preserved. Interior fresh and clean overall, Rives paper well-preserved.
