PÉRET (Benjamin). - Lot 226
PÉRET (Benjamin). Complete Works. Volume 2: From Behind the Brushwood. I Sublimate. Three Cherries and a Sardine. Last Misfortune, Last Chance. That’s It. Groping in the Dark. “Mexican Air.” “A Whole Life.” “Muffled Cries.” “Other Poems.” “Lately.” Paris: Association of Friends of Benjamin Péret—Éric Losfeld, 1971. In-8, paperback, softcover of yellow laid paper printed in black, printed spine. Printed by S.N.I.L. in Paris in June 1971; legal deposit for the second quarter of 1971. ORIGINAL COLLECTIVE EDITION Second volume of the Complete Works of Benjamin Péret, following the first volume published in 1969 by the Association of Friends of Benjamin Péret and Éric Losfeld. A significant collection of Péret’s poetry collections, including notably *De derrière les fagots*, *Je sublime*, *Trois cerises et une sardine*, *Dernier malheur dernière chance*, *Un point c’est tout*, *À tâtons*, and *Air mexicain*, along with *Toute une vie*, *Des cris étouffés*, various other poems, and *Dernièrement*. This editorial project, undertaken after Péret’s death, made it possible to systematically compile a body of work that had previously been widely scattered across first editions, pamphlets, and journals that had become difficult to find. Benjamin Péret (1899–1959) was one of the founding members and most steadfast participants in the Surrealist group. Close to André Breton from the movement’s earliest years, he maintained throughout his life a particularly radical conception of poetry, combining freedom of imagery, humor, the marvelous, and rebellion. Several of the collections gathered here rank among his major poetic works. A very fine copy in its original yellow publisher’s binding, looking particularly fresh, with only very slight signs of wear. Interior in excellent condition.
