ROMAN MISSAL, illustrated by Edgar Maxence - Lot 206
ROMAN MISSAL, illustrated by Edgar Maxence Roman Missal. Illustrated by Edgard Maxence, of the Institute. Tours, Maison Mame, Pontifical Publishers, [circa 1933–1934]. Small 8vo, full brown leather, spine ribbed with gold lettering, covers decorated with intaglio-engraved stylized motifs of fish and waves; ornate metal plate on the front cover; color illustrations and borders by Edgard Maxence. Copy preserved in its original fabric-lined slipcase with a metal clasp. The visible imprimatur page is dated October 6, 1933, which allows us to pinpoint the publication to around 1933–1934. A beautiful example of Mame’s Art Deco religious publications. The appeal here lies as much in the decorative binding, Maxence’s illustrations, and the slipcase as in the text itself. Condition: leather is scuffed with minor imperfections and wear; the case is quite worn and stained on the inside, but the set is complete and decorative.
