MACHIAVELLI — The Prince, followed by Frederick II’s Anti-Ma - Lot 184
MACHIAVELLI — The Prince, followed by Frederick II’s Anti-Machiavelli MACHIAVELLI (Niccolò). — The Prince. Translation by Guiraudet, revised and corrected, followed by Frederick II’s Anti-Machiavelli, with all of Voltaire’s corrections. Introduction and notes by Raymond Naves. Paris, Éditions Garnier Frères, “Classiques Garnier,” 1949. In-18, paperback, cream-colored cover printed in black and red, printed spine. Printed on “Plumex” Téka vellum by the André Tardy printing house in Bourges. This volume brings together two major works of European political thought: Machiavelli’s *The Prince* and Frederick II of Prussia’s *The Anti-Machiavelli*. The former is presented in Charles Guiraudet’s French translation, revised and corrected; the latter is presented with Voltaire’s corrections. The collection is preceded by a substantial historical and critical introduction and accompanied by notes by Raymond Naves, a professor at the Faculty of Letters at the University of Toulouse and a specialist in 18th-century literature and thought. This editorial comparison is particularly interesting: Machiavelli’s treatise on the acquisition, exercise, and preservation of power is countered by the text composed by the future Frederick II, in which he sets out to refute Machiavellian principles. Voltaire was closely involved in the development and publication of the *Anti-Machiavelli* in the 18th century. Garnier edition from 1949, legal deposit from the first quarter of 1949, edition no. 220, printing no. 664. Condition A fine copy preserved in its original publisher’s binding. The cover is slightly yellowed and shows a few small marks and signs of wear; the spine is clean, with minor scuffing on the cap ends. A small old price tag is attached to the back cover. The interior is in good condition, with a few very slight marks and occasional visible creases. The copy remains generally fresh.
