HOMER. — The Iliad. The Odyssey. New translation by Mario Me - Lot 138
HOMER. — The Iliad. The Odyssey. New translation by Mario Meunier. Illustrations by Berthold-Mahn. Paris, Union Latine d'Éditions, [1943]. 4 square in-8 volumes: *The Iliad* in 2 volumes and *The Odyssey* in 2 volumes, publisher’s vellum-style cloth bindings, covers decorated with color illustrations and black titles, spines titled. Endpapers illustrated with a large color map of the Homeric world. A beautiful illustrated edition of Mario Meunier’s translation, lavishly adorned with compositions by Charles Désiré Berthold-Mahn, both within and outside the text, including several full-page and double-page illustrations. The artist’s original drawings were reproduced in facsimile by Daniel Jacomet. The illustrations include, notably, 28 full-page compositions, 113 in-text illustrations, and 48 color headpieces. Copy No. 5437 on rag paper, part of a print run of 5,500 copies numbered from 1,751 to 7,250. The total print run also includes 10 non-commercial copies on pearlescent Japanese paper, 50 on pearlescent Japanese paper, 500 on Byblis pure-thread paper, and 1,200 on Lafuma pure-thread paper. The photographed colophon thus confirms that No. 5437 is a copy from the standard print run on rag-woven vellum. All four volumes are present: *The Iliad* I–II and *The Odyssey* I–II. The complete edition consists of four volumes and contains approximately 330, 354, 283, and 271 pages. The cardboard covers are faded, with browning and soiling, scuffing, small tears, and paper loss at the caps and ends of the spines, particularly on the first volume of *The Odyssey*; there are a few dents on the corners and edges. Despite these external flaws, the set remains sturdy and decorative. The interiors appear clean and well-preserved, with vivid illustrations. Based on the photographs, the original dust jackets and slipcases are missing. An attractive illustrated edition of Homer, complete in all four volumes and particularly decorative thanks to Berthold-Mahn’s compositions and the color maps.
