WRIGHT (Thomas). — A History of Caricature and the Grotesque - Lot 312
WRIGHT (Thomas). — A History of Caricature and the Grotesque in Literature and Art WRIGHT (Thomas). A History of Caricature and the Grotesque in Literature and Art. Translated by Octave Sachot. Second edition, illustrated with 238 engravings interspersed throughout the text. Introduction by Amédée Pichot. Paris, Adolphe Delahays, Bookseller and Publisher, 1875. Substantial volume in large 8vo (approx. 24.5 × 17 cm), XXXV-457 pp., 238 woodcuts in the text, paperback, printed and illustrated cover by the publisher. Second French edition of this important history of caricature and the grotesque, written by the British archaeologist and historian Thomas Wright (1810–1877), translated by Octave Sachot and preceded by an introduction by Amédée Pichot. The collation of this edition is indeed XXXV-457 pages and 238 illustrations. A particularly comprehensive work, tracing the history of comic, satirical, and grotesque representation from antiquity to modern times. Wright successively examines the imagery of Egypt, Greece, and Rome; medieval imagery; monsters and demons; church sculptures and ornamentation; fools and jesters; and finally the development of European graphic satire and caricature. The study extends to the great English caricaturists, notably William Hogarth. The remarkable iconography, featuring 238 engraved illustrations, is one of the book’s main attractions: ancient scenes, medieval marginalia, Romanesque and Gothic sculptures, devils, monsters, grotesques, court jesters, scenes of everyday life, and caricatures are reproduced throughout the text. This copy is preserved in its rare, illustrated publisher’s paperback binding, a condition that is now significantly less common than bound copies. Fair condition: cover is faded and heavily rubbed, with losses and tears along the edges; spine heavily worn with significant paper loss and fragile stitching; scattered foxing and stains, some quite pronounced. Nevertheless, the copy is complete as it appears and has retained its original presentation.
