VARAGNAC (André) & FABRE (Gabrielle). — GALLIC ART. VARAGNAC (André) & FABRE (Gabrielle). — Gallic Art. With the collaboration of Monique Mainjonet. Unpublished photographs by G. Franceschi, R.-G. Phélipeaux, P. Belzeaux, and J. Dieuzaide. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Zodiaque, “La Nuit des Temps” series, No. 4, 1964. Substantial square in-8 volume (approx. 22.5 × 18 cm), 2nd edition, approx. 287 pp., bound in the publisher’s full beige cloth, title on spine, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket and original cardboard slipcase. Bookmark retained. An important monograph devoted to the art and civilization of the Celtic and Gallic peoples, from the origins of the Celtic world through the Gallo-Roman period. The book focuses in particular on sculpture, ceramics, bronzes, animal statuary, coins, and gold and silver work, with significant attention given to archaeological finds. Extensive photographic illustrations, in both black-and-white and color, including numerous full-page reproductions: anthropomorphic sculptures, deities, horses and votive animals, ceramics, stelae, Celtic coins, and archaeological objects. The photographs are primarily by Pierre Belzeaux and Jean Dieuzaide. This second edition from 1964 revisits and expands upon the fourth volume of the famous *La Nuit des Temps* collection, the first edition of which was published in 1956. Copies complete with their dust jacket and, above all, their original slipcase are now more sought after than common copies in paperback alone. Copies from 1964 currently available on the market range from approximately €18–25 for ordinary copies up to about €35 when they are complete and in fine condition. A good copy, complete with its dust jacket and slipcase. Clean and fresh interior. Binding well-preserved. Dust jacket shows some rubbing and minor wear on the head and foot and at the corners, with a small tear along the edge at the bottom of the back cover. Original slipcase present, slightly rubbed and marked.
