VANUATU - OCEANIA. Arts of the Islands of Ash and Coral. - Lot 298
VANUATU - OCEANIA. Arts of the Islands of Ash and Coral. Paris, Réunion des Musées Nationaux - ORSTOM, 1996. Large in-4° volume, softcover with illustrated flaps, 368 pp., lavishly illustrated with photographs, reproductions of objects, ethnographic documents, and figures, in black-and-white and color. ISBN 2-7118-2914-6. An important catalog published to accompany the major traveling exhibition devoted to the arts and cultures of Vanuatu, which was presented successively at the Port Vila Museum (June 28–August 10, 1996), at the Territorial Museum of New Caledonia in Nouméa (September 3–October 30, 1996), at the Museum für Völkerkunde in Basel (March 15–August 10, 1997), and then at the National Museum of African and Oceanic Arts in Paris (September 30, 1997–February 2, 1998). This information is confirmed by the BnF and WorldCat. A collective catalog to which Christian Kaufmann, Roger Boulay, and Kirk Huffman, among others, contributed. Significance of the Work The work examines the arts of Vanuatu within their ritual and social contexts—sculptures and effigies, masks, painted mats, objects related to coming-of-age ceremonies, tooth pigs, sand drawings, funerary practices, and objects of power. It remains a standard reference work: the catalog is still cited in scholarly descriptions of museum collections related to ritual objects from Vanuatu. Condition A good copy. The interior is clean and appears to be complete. The cover is well-preserved but shows scuffing and scratches, particularly visible against the black background; there are minor marks and wear on the top and bottom edges and at the corners. The spine and binding, however, appear sturdy.
