TURNER (Joseph Mallord William) — Turner 1775–1851 TURNER (Joseph Mallord William). — Turner 1775–1851. Exhibition of paintings organized by the Tate Gallery for the British Council. Paris, Musée de l'Orangerie, 1948. In-8, 23 pp. and 10 plates, paperback, cream-colored cover printed and decorated with blue and black borders. Black-and-white and color illustrations. The bibliographic entry in Paris Musées lists a size of 24 cm and attributes the catalog to John Rothenstein and Humphrey Brooke. Catalog of the major Turner exhibition organized in 1948 by the Tate Gallery for the British Council and presented in Paris at the Musée de l’Orangerie. The BnF confirms the 1948 Paris edition as well as the attribution of the catalog to Rothenstein and Brooke. The exhibition brings together paintings and watercolors that trace the various periods of J. M. W. Turner’s (1775–1851) oeuvre, from his early landscapes—still influenced by the English topographical tradition—to the atmospheric compositions of his mature years. The exhibition notes provide detailed information on the works on display, including their techniques, dimensions, and provenance. Among the works reproduced are *The Common at Clapham*, *Yacht Approaching the Coast*, St. Benedetto, Looking Toward Fusina, as well as several watercolors, including the Ruins of Malmesbury Abbey, the Ruins of Tintern Abbey, the Mill near the Grande Chartreuse, Dauphiné, and The Source of the Arveron: Chamonix Valley. This event was part of a series of European exhibitions organized by the Tate Gallery and the British Council in 1948; a version of the exhibition was also presented that same year at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Well-preserved copy. A few small foxing spots and stains on the cover, mainly in the margins; slight wear at the corners. Interior is fresh, and illustrations are well-preserved. Small vintage label bearing the number “604” on the front cover.
