RICKENBACH (Judith), ed. Tlingit: Ancient Native American Ar - Lot 266
RICKENBACH (Judith), ed. Tlingit: Ancient Native American Art from Alaska. Masterpieces from the Art Collection of Tsar Peter the Great, Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia. Zurich, Museum Rietberg, 2001. Large quarto (approx. 31 × 23 cm), 256 pp., publisher’s illustrated hardcover, very extensive illustrations, mainly in color, maps, and historical documents. Text in German. First edition. ISBN 3-907070-97-6 / 978-3-907070-97-0. A collation by the Smithsonian Libraries confirms the 256 pages, the 31-cm format, and the 2001 publication date. An important catalog of the exhibition at the Museum Rietberg in Zurich, dedicated to the ancient art of the Tlingit people of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. The exhibition was on view at the Museum Rietberg through May 6, 2001, and was supported in part by the Vontobel Foundation. Edited by Judith Rickenbach, the book examines a particularly remarkable collection of Tlingit artifacts from Peter the Great’s Kunstkamera in Saint Petersburg, now the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Among the contributors is Aldona Jonaitis, a renowned specialist in Northwest Coast art. The book presents the history of early contacts and the first collections, followed by the various forms of Tlingit art: ceremonial masks and headdresses, shamanic objects, Chilkat textiles and blankets, wood carvings, status symbols, and ornaments. The works are accompanied by particularly comprehensive historical and ethnographic documentation. One of the catalog’s major attractions lies in the historical provenance of the reproduced pieces: it documents masterpieces housed in Saint Petersburg, some of which were collected during the early Russian encounters with Alaska. It remains to this day a specialized bibliographic reference on Tlingit art. Richly illustrated, with numerous full-page color reproductions, close-ups of objects, historical documents, and photographs. The pages shown here feature, in particular, the famous “Raven’s Tail” and Chilkat blankets, as well as frontal masks and shamanic headdresses. A very fine copy with a particularly fresh interior. The illustrated hardcover is very well preserved; there is only very slight scuffing or minor damage to the corners and edges, with no apparent major defects.
