PAULME (Denise) & BROSSE (Jacques). — AFRICAN ORNAMENTS - Lot 250
PAULME (Denise) & BROSSE (Jacques). — AFRICAN ORNAMENTS PAULME (Denise) & BROSSE (Jacques). African Ornaments. Photographs by M. Huet, P. Verger, Grandin, Borel, Matter, Martin, Darbois, and Brandt. Paris, Hachette, “Tout par l’image” series, n.d. [circa 1955–1960]. Quarto, publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding, white cloth spine. First edition of this beautiful ethnographic publication devoted to jewelry, costumes, body ornaments, and ceremonial attire of the peoples of sub-Saharan Africa. The text was written by Denise Paulme, then head of the Black Africa Department at the Musée de l’Homme, and Jacques Brosse. The book is remarkably illustrated with an abundant collection of black-and-white and color photographs, often full-page, taken notably by Pierre Verger, Marcel Huet, and several prominent traveling photographers and ethnographers. The book examines adornment not merely as decoration, but as a marker of identity, rank, age, and social status, as well as an essential element of ceremonies, initiations, and religious observances. Hairstyles, jewelry, body paintings, scarifications, clothing, masks, and dance costumes are placed in the context of their use. Beautiful documentary illustrations, featuring in particular women’s adornments, jewelry, and hairstyles from Sudan and East Africa; young initiates; dance costumes; bird-men; and impressive ceremonial masks and adornments, including several photographs taken during festivals and ritual dances. Pierre Verger’s contribution to the photographic illustrations is a particular highlight of the book, as his African ethnographic photographs are now highly sought after alongside his work dedicated to the Afro-Brazilian world. The hardcover binding is intact, which is notable for this type of publication. Wear and scuffing on the cover, rounded corners, the cloth spine is marked with a small weakness at the bottom, and there are a few signs of use; the interior is in satisfactory condition.
