A comprehensive overview by Pierre Paris, member of the Institut de France and director of the Casa Velázquez, devoted to the history of Spanish painting from its origins to the early 19th century. The work traces the major stages of the Spanish school and examines, in particular, the Primitives, the Renaissance, and the great masters of the Golden Age, including El Greco, Ribera, Zurbarán, Velázquez, and Murillo. Extensive iconography comprising 64 full-page photographic plates, reproducing works held in major European collections. Cover is worn, browned, and scuffed, with creases and small marginal losses; a few scattered foxing spots. Interior and plates are in good condition.
