MARSCHALL (Hans-Günther) & SLOTTA (Rainer). — Romanic Lo - Lot 220
MARSCHALL (Hans-Günther) & SLOTTA (Rainer). — Romanic Lorraine MARSCHALL (Hans-Günther) & SLOTTA (Rainer). Romanic Lorraine. Unpublished photographs by Zodiaque. Translated from German by G. Schecher. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Zodiaque, 1984. Large 8vo, 333 pp., very abundant black-and-white photographic illustrations, architectural plans and surveys, 162 hors-texte heliogravures, and 4 color plates; publisher’s full red cloth binding, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket and a cardboard slipcase. “La Nuit des Temps” series, no. 61. French first edition, published in 1984, of this important monograph devoted to Romanesque architecture in Lorraine. The work is by architect and art historian Hans-Günther Marschall and historian Rainer Slotta; the French translation is by G. Schecher. Following a historical and artistic introduction, the authors present a comprehensive inventory of Romanesque architecture in Lorraine, examining the buildings within their architectural context: floor plans, the layout of naves and transepts, apses, bell towers, sculptures, and later alterations. Among the monuments studied are Étival, Flavigny-sur-Moselle, Verdun, and numerous churches and abbeys in Lorraine. The book is particularly remarkable for its illustrations: 162 photogravures, along with four color plates, maps, floor plans, and architectural surveys. The photographs, taken specifically for Zodiaque, lend the volume the documentary and aesthetic quality characteristic of the famous *La Nuit des Temps* collection. A beautiful, complete copy with its original illustrated dust jacket and slipcase. The dust jacket, however, shows fairly significant flaws: tears and missing sections at the top, particularly on the front cover, as well as small snags and scuffing along the edges; the slipcase shows signs of wear. The book itself appears to be in very good condition.
