LEWIS-WILLIAMS (David) — Rock Art in South Africa: Mysteriou - Lot 210
LEWIS-WILLIAMS (David) — Rock Art in South Africa: Mysterious Images of the Drakensberg LEWIS-WILLIAMS (David). Rock Art in South Africa: Mysterious Images from the Drakensberg. Translated from the English by Jean Clottes. Paris, Seuil, “Arts rupestres” series, 2003. Large quarto (approx. 31 × 28 cm), 128 pp., numerous illustrations, photographs, and drawings in black-and-white and color, several of which are full-page or double-page spreads. Publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. ISBN 978-2-02-032781-7. The French edition is indeed the one published by Seuil in 2003. A beautiful monograph devoted to the extraordinary rock paintings of the San of the Drakensberg in southern Africa and their ritual and shamanic interpretations. David Lewis-Williams, one of the leading experts on South African rock art, uses the 1873 expedition led by J. M. Orpen in the Drakensberg Mountains as his central theme. The accounts gathered at that time from a San provided essential insights for understanding depictions that had long remained enigmatic: elands, human figures, trance dances, and “rain animals.” The author compares these historical accounts with modern ethnographic and archaeological research and develops an interpretation of these paintings based in particular on the religious beliefs and experiences of the San. The book also situates this art within the particularly violent historical context of the encounter between indigenous peoples and colonial expansion. Abundant and remarkable iconography, combining photographs of the painted rock faces, close-ups, historical documents, and survey drawings. The large-scale compositions reproduced in color make the book particularly spectacular. The French translation is by the prehistorian Jean Clottes, who also directed the “Arts rupestres” series published by Seuil. The book is among the leading French scholarly works on South African rock art. A very fine copy. The hardcover and interior are in excellent condition; the dust jacket is intact, glossy, and clean, with only very slight signs of handling.
