LEBEUF (Jean-Paul and Annie) The Arts of the Sao. Cameroon, - Lot 202
LEBEUF (Jean-Paul and Annie) The Arts of the Sao. Cameroon, Chad, Nigeria. Photographs by Dominique Darbois. Paris, Éditions du Chêne, 1977. Large in-4 (29 × 20 cm), ochre publisher’s hardcover, with illustrated dust jacket, 205 pp. (some editions total 207 or 208 pp. including the front and back matter). First edition; no deluxe edition reported. An important monograph devoted to the Sao civilization, which developed around the Lake Chad basin and the territories that today correspond to Cameroon, Chad, and Nigeria. Jean-Paul and Annie Lebeuf present a synthesis of several decades of archaeological and ethnographic research. Jean-Paul Lebeuf is, in fact, considered one of the pioneers of ethnoarchaeology, and his name remains particularly associated with the rediscovery of the Sao civilization. The book examines the archaeological remains and artistic productions of the Sao—anthropomorphic terracotta figures, pottery, bronzes, jewelry and adornments, ritual and everyday objects—by placing them in their historical and cultural context. The authors identified nearly 700 “Sao mounds” in Cameroon, Chad, and Nigeria, comparing the archaeological discoveries with the traditions still practiced by the Kotoko people. The book features a wealth of photographs by Dominique Darbois. The professional edition includes 11 photographs, 95 reproductions of objects, 5 maps and plans, as well as drawings, a bibliography, and an index. Dominique Darbois’s contribution adds significant value: her documentary photographs, which are very understated here, showcase the terracotta pieces and archaeological artifacts particularly well. The BnF, in fact, lists her as the book’s illustrator. A fine copy, in very fresh condition inside. The hardcover is in good condition, and the original dust jacket is well-preserved, with only slight signs of handling and a few minor scuffs or marginal creases.
